Need guidance, suggestions and directions. 81+yr, retired, RVN Vet, amateur and food bank gardener (1.5 acre).
Auction purchased this beauty about 5 yrs ago to cultivate sweet corn rows. Not many hours of use since but last early summer would only run at full choke. Checked sed bowl and noted deposits and after clean out etc. would not start up again. Would only fire on sustained ether but not on fresh gas. Assumed carb needed clean out. Had to put it up till early Spring of this year. Noted it needed new gaskets so figured to get fresh parts with replacement kit, having done so before with a Farmal Super C, 2 IH Cub Cadets, Sears Suburban 12 and 15. (Not bragging but I own a lot of junk that needs repair).
Did very through clean out with carb cleaner, compressed air, welding cutting torch probes, and Dremel wire brushing to make it spotless. Replaced provided jets as well as all gaskets and set float to proper height. Reassembled and returned to tractor still no sustained run unless continuous ether spray.
Back checked fuel, tank, feed lines, and replaced all spark plugs, timing gap, compression each cyl. (65psi), vacuum to carb bottom as well as intake manifold flange. ...No change. Sent carb to insure internal clean out to trusted small engine repair shop with their ultra sonic cleaner. Still no change, no ignition unless continuous ether spray. Checked oil pan, no fluid of gas settlement.
Took carb to old friend with larger tractor dealership, formerly Oliver but now New Holland and who previously owned AC-Gs. As they dismantled to ultra sonic noted there was no Venturi. I could not explain how that was possible since when I first dismantled it I can not recall its removal since I think and know I work on a totally clean surgical table work bench, put everything removed into the magnet dishes or zip lock bags. The only possibility was the small shop who did the first sonic clean out but I totally trust the owner who who stated there was no way it (Venturi)was left out at reassembly.
I searched and searched my work area over and over again to no avail so I decided to purchase a new kit with one available which I did find. I was assured that this kit included a printed schematic so that I utilized the gaskets in the proper position. The first replacement kit did not include one and arrived loose in a plastic sealed bag. When I contacted the supplier, I could only speak to a pleasant young lady who had only computer contact and knew nothing about carbs or their replacement parts other than I ordered the right kit for the M-S TVS 13. My most recent supply source, M&M , is very communicative but I have had some trouble of late making a connection to answer a few technical questions and I hesitate to start reassembly an installation to the tractor before I get some questions answered.
1. I noted that the 1st. kit replaced was the Economy (40.00) and did not have the throttle shaft replacement that Steiner shows in their Basic Kit (64.95). When I dismantled the original, it had a definite score and the brass ?retainer had a lot of play to the shaft and when I removed the old retainer (with a collection of surgical tools) the fabric gasket was almost down to threads. Could this less that tight fit have weakened the vacuum pull of the fuel from the carb bowl to the intake manifold and be responsible for the sustained running problem? I did spray ether when checking for potential leaks but not sure I included the throttle shaft area.
2. I note that none of the number of kits I searched have replacements of the choke shaft assembly, but the brass retainer is included but not the fiber packing which I assume is a sort of gasket. My original shaft is worn with some minor scoring and I noted a moderate play when manipulated. Are any available and where. Also, should the brass retainer be replaced. Those are very tight and I don't wan to damage the main housing. does a small leak reduce the vacuum efficiency or should I leave well enough alone.
3. When installing the needle valve assembly seat, I can not get the grooves to be either 90 deg to180 deg to the float lever pin since i am concerned that the small wire spring that maintains the needle to the base of the floats might get hung up in one of the grooves. Is that a potential problem or just make sure the assembly seat is appropriately tight-to the throttle body.
I have attempted to attach photos of the various components but they are rejected because the file size is too large.
Thank You for you time and effort to slug through this very long narrative. There are no local M-S TVS 13 experienced repair people or I would have secured this option long ago.
