CA Hand clutch question that I hope someone can help me with. I am working on removing the drum on the right side of my CA, the side with the hand
clutch.
For the purpose of this question, I will try to use nomenclature as follows:
final drive housing, right side
wheel end vs differential end
Short shaft-the one that drives the bull gear (wheel end) out of the brake drum/ disc half of clutch (disc assy or "spring cover" in the manual)
bull gear- has 77 teeth, the largest gear in the final drive assy
Oil tube
sring cover- clutch part that attaches to the brake drum
bushing- in the brake drum
snap ring- in the brake drum
any of these can be found in the CA repair or parts manual
On to the problem:
I have removed the entire clutch assy from the brake drum and the short shaft, the bushing and the snap ring from the brake drum I have also removed
the bull gear. Remaining in the final drive housing is the brake drum, its woodruff key, the short shaft, the oil tube and the outer bearing on the
short shaft. Acccording to the manual there is a set screw in the brake drum- I cannot see it and there is no access to the hub of the drum (the
side toward the wheel end). I can see the groove for the woodruff key from the differential end of the final drive housing. I cannot budge the drum
using hammers, heat, wedges, rust buster, etc. I purchased a 20 ton press to attempt to drive the shaft from the wheel end, it will not move the
shaft more than aprox 3/8 of an inch. I don't know what the inside of the housing is like outboard of the brake drum, and I am assuming that the oil
tube is jamming against something on the inside of the casting of the final drive housing. When I applied the press, the shaft, the bearing inner
race and ball bearing moved into the housing, about 3/8 of an inch (as I mentioned above) and it would not move any further. It is not apparent to
me how I could rig the housing on the press to drive the shaft out of the housing toward the wheel end as the housing forms a bell on that end and
will not sit flat on the table of the press.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or criticisms?? I can be reached at 360 450 3989 or Ruhadeen@cablespeed.com.
